Informed Consent for Rural B.C. Cannabis Thoughtexchange Survey

The aim of this research project is to uncover citizens’ preliminary thoughts and concerns regarding the opportunities and challenges of the upcoming legalization of recreational cannabis to rural regions of B.C.

This survey, which is referred to as an exchange, is designed for completion by text or SMS. If you agree to participate in this exchange, we ask that you send a text/SMS to the number provided below. After doing so, you will receive a response back via text, requesting that you first answer some demographic questions, by texting back. Then you will be texted again, asking you to confidentially share your thoughts on this topic. Your thoughts will be available to other participants to consider and rate. The benefits of sharing your thoughts, as provided via the Thoughtexchange platform, are to voice your point of view on this polarizing topic confidentially, but publicly.

The data collected will be used within a larger PhD project, which aims to uncover the socioeconomic implications of the legalization of recreational cannabis to rural areas of B.C, with a specific focus on the Kootenay economic development region. The data gathered from this exchange may be shared in aggregated, non-identifying ways at conferences, within related publications and informational seminars in the future.

If you agree to participate in the exchange, it will take a minimum of 5 to 7 minutes. Your participation is voluntary. You may withdraw at any time. You are welcome to skip the question, and just rate other people’s thoughts. You are also welcome to not rate any other thoughts. Engaging in this process is entirely up to you.

There are no known risks if you decide to participate in this exchange. Any thoughts or ratings you choose to share will remain confidential to the public as long as you do not write your name or provide any identifying information. Only Thoughtexchange staff will have access to your cell number and email if your choose to sign up for the exchange, and these people are required to keep such information strictly confidential. See Thoughtexchange’s Terms of Use for more information on privacy protection. The lead researcher may have access to your email address if you choose to sign up for the exchange, however, your thoughts or ratings will never be associated with your email address.
